York encourages car free attitude

Back

York is hoping to encourage people to abandon their cars and get around by bus, bicycle or foot for one day next month.

People are being encouraged to find other ways to travel in a bid to reduce congestion in the city, with the event that has been arranged by City of York Council and businesses in the area designed to show people the alternatives. There are no plans to close roads.

Those who register in advance can catch First and Transdev busses for free, while there will also be initiatives to encourage cycling and using public transport on the day.

"York Car Free Day is about encouraging people who would usually drive into the city to try cycling, using buses or walking for the day," said assistant director for City development and Transport for City of York Council Damon Copperthwaite.

"We recognise that private cars do have a place in modern life, but if people could reduce their car journeys and only use the car when it's absolutely necessary, York would be a cleaner, greener and healthier city. And rather ironically, it would also mean that essential car journeys would be even quicker because of decreased congestion levels."
