Worries lead to seatbelts for Peppa

Motorists with children have expressed relief that the maker of children's show Peppa Pig has decided to include car seatbelts in the programme.

The seatbelts were added to the animated show after parents expressed concerns over safety. Not only is wearing no seatbelt dangerous, it can also lead to fines - which may affect car insurance premiums.

The company that makes the show, Astley Baker Davies, said it considered strapping the family of pigs in when it first made the Nick Jr programme, but felt it might limit their range of expressions.

Broadcast magazine reported some parents expressing concern that children might try to follow Peppa's lead, prompting a rethink by the Bafta-winning children's animation company.

Astley Baker Davies was said to be introducing seatbelts to new episodes and re-animating scenes from the first and second series.

"Everything Peppa does reflects a child's real world," the animation company's co-founder Mark Baker told Broadcast.

"We were very naive when we started making Peppa and we did mess up. If we could turn the clock back, we would."
