Women 'intimidated' by garages

Back

More than half of women still feel uneasy about a visit to the ‘male’ world of car mechanics, a poll has found.

A total of 52 per cent found taking their vehicle in for a service was “daunting”, while 32 per cent would like to see women-only garages, a survey for Diamond found.

Age was shown to be an important factor when it came to confidence, with 75 per cent of women aged 19-25 admitting to feeling intimidated when visiting a garage.

Of the 4,000 women polled, 60 per cent said motor sales people were patronising and a third would prefer to buy a car from a woman.

Expert Sian Lewis said: "Today's generation of female motorists are knowledgeable about cars and many do basic servicing themselves.

However, garages still seem to be very much a man's domain and can be intimidating for some women. Women-only garages could make for a more comfortable experience."
