Warning over car cover while abroad

Back

With an increasing number of UK holidaymakers planning to take their cars to Europe a motoring organisation has warned drivers to make sure that their car insurance covers them to drive abroad before taking the trip.

Few things are as likely to put a dampener on a motoring holiday than a massive repair bill or being involved in a bad accident while abroad.

AA spokesperson Ian Crowder said: "If you are taking your car out of the UK it's very easy to just assume that if you're covered in the UK you are going to be covered elsewhere in Europe.”

While drivers are often covered, there can sometimes be several conditions which have an influence on what is and is not offered.

He said that drivers should check their insurance policy so that they would not find their holiday coming to an abrupt end as the result of an accident and the prospect of large repair bills.

The British Insurance Brokers' Association, UK car insurance deals tend to provide cover in the EU which only meets the minimum legal requirements.
