A poll of 3,000 UK motorists has revealed a growing trend of complacency over car crime with more and more drivers admitting to leaving items on display in their cars.
The survey, conducted by Admiral, found the number of people leaving items on display rose from 71% last year to 73% this year, reflecting a tendency for drivers to underestimate the threat posed by thieves.
Motorists have been warned to be on their guard over the festive period when thieves are more likely to target car owners who leave gifts and presents on display.
Admiral managing director Sue Longthorn said: "At this time of year, people will often leave their Christmas shopping on show on the back seat of their car. For a criminal this is an open invitation. Think how heartbroken you would be if you had your presents stolen."
An overall 39% of motorists said they now hid their car keys at night and when they leave home without their cars, as they have become more aware of the steps that thieves are willing take in order to bypass car security systems.
