Tornado tears through UK towns

Back

A tornado has swept through several Hampshire towns, causing damage to houses, cars and businesses.

Police said the incident, which occurred at around 1.30pm on Wednesday, brought down 25 trees and broke power lines.

No-one was injured by the freak weather, but one elderly man was treated for shock after the tornado hit the town of Romsey on its way to Winchester.

Shop worker Samantha Pritchard, who saw the tornado go past, said: "All the leaves were swirling around in circles in the road and it was raining so heavily we could not see.

There were also trees knocked down further up the road."

The Met Office said that several inches of rain had fallen in Winchester during the event.
