A survey has revealed that 70% of people who buy a vehicle online feel they're more vulnerable to fraud than if they did so face to face.
HPI, an independent vehicle information provider, said it'd found up to 71% of respondents gave the level of choice as the main bonus of buying online, while nearly 70% believed they were more at risk from used car crime.
The organisation said buyers should back buying decisions with thorough research to avoid any pitfalls.
"Our survey reveals only 48% would be more likely to carry out even the most basic of checks, such as an online valuation," said Nick Lindsay, director of HPI.
Other things to look out for include checking the vehicle's description using the VRM or registration number, determining whether it has been stolen, written-off by an insurance company or is subject to outstanding finance.
"There's good news for sellers, because 45% of those surveyed said they would be prepared to travel over 100 miles for the car they wanted, having done all the necessary online checks to ensure it was worth the journey," Mr Lindsay added.
