Surge in new car production

Back

UK car production rose by 90.2% last month compared with March last year, new figures have revealed.

And the statistics from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) could potentially lead to greater demand for car insurance.

The figures show that a total of 117,622 cars were manufactured in March showing five consecutive months of growth. Commercial vehicle production rose 61.1% from the same time last year.

The growth comes after a tough period for car production last year, with major cuts in vehicle manufacturing, including Honda ceasing production at it's Swindon plant.

SMMT chief executive Paul Everitt said today: "UK automotive production continued to make progress in March with strong growth in commercial vehicle, engine and car production.

"Headline figures highlight the scale of challenges faced this time last year, but also demonstrate a steady improvement in demand in home and export markets."
