Strange driving habits revealed

Claims for car insurance will persist if motorists continue to do a list of strange things, including putting on mascara, making eyes at attractive pedestrians and eating meals, while at the wheel.

A 22-year-old woman was convicted of careless driving for a "mirror, signal, mascara" offence, while a male driver, who was using an electric shaver at the wheel, was fined £300 and handed six months driving ban for careless driving.

Motorists have also been fined for eating apples, Mars bars, and texting while driving.

Seven in 10 males admitted to having been distracted by an attractive person in another car or on the street, while only a quarter of women agreed to have been distracted in a similar way, the AA/Populus survey revealed.

Tailgating topped the list of irritant for drivers, followed by motorists talking on hand-held mobiles, middle-lane hoggers, crawlers and motorists changing lanes constantly.

AA president Edmund King said: "We hope that drivers in 2010 will make a resolution to leave their bad habits behind them.

"Some treat the car as an extension of their home and think nothing of applying make-up, shaving or watching movies on the move."

He added: "Mirror, signal, manoeuvre should be the driver tactic rather than mirror, signal, mascara."
