Britain’s insurers are joining forces in a bid to clamp down on motorcycle crime after figures showed that almost 50,000 motorbikes are stolen every year.
With up to half of the 48,000 motorcycles stolen annually never recovered, the insurance industry agreed that drastic measures were needed to tackle the problem. The Government-backed initiative will see a new vehicle security assessment scheme extended to include bikes.
The scheme, developed by motor research centre Thatcham, will give motorbikes star ratings based on a range of categories, including the likelihood of being stolen.
"Our star rating scheme for passenger cars, heavy goods vehicles and light commercial vehicles has proved a great success in providing a consumer facing assessment of a vehicle's security," said the company’s vehicle security manager, Mike Briggs.
"Given the current fairly low attention paid to motorcycle security, I know the new motorcycle star rating scheme will be welcomed and will drive improvements in motorcycle security."
