Rusty drivers 'risking road safety'

Back

Drivers "rusty" from not being on the road for months were responsible for nearly 100,000 accidents last year, a report has claimed.

Research by Lloyds TSB found that people who had not been behind the wheel for six months made four times as many serious safety errors.

The study involved 40 adults, half of whom were returning to motoring after a break of between six months and five years.

Serious "deficiencies" noticed among the returning motorists included speeding and problems with clutch control and steering, the report said, adding that it was important for such drivers to take refresher lessons.

Karen McCarthy, of Lloyds, said: "There is no substitute for practice and anyone thinking of getting behind the wheel after a long break needs to think really carefully about the risks.

"A simple refresher lesson or practice in a low traffic area can make a huge difference to your confidence and road awareness."
