Police probe explosion at flats

Police are tying to establish the cause of an explosion at a block of flats in the West Midlands which injured 12 people.

Two people were seriously hurt in the incident in Shrewsbury, with one woman, in her early 20s, suffering severe burns to her head, neck and chest when she was blown out of the building from the first floor.

A fire service spokesman confirmed there had been "quite a significant gas leak" but added that it was possible for this to have been caused by the explosion.

The end of the building was completely destroyed in the blast and nearby cars were also badly damaged, a police spokesman said.

Rubble was left covering the road after explosion at the residential block, which included a hotel as part of the complex.
