Phone thieves target concert-goers

Music lovers have been warned of the threat posed by organised gangs of thieves who are targeting fans carrying expensive mobile phones at gigs and concerts.

Police issued the warning after recording a rise in the number of thefts at music events where bustling crowds and loud music make it easy for pickpockets and thieves to target distracted fans.

Mobile phones have replaced the more traditional sight of lighters at modern day gigs, as fans look to capture the moment with photos and videos of their favourite artists using top-end handsets.

Phone users are reminded to check that their home insurance policies cover their possessions for theft outside of the house, with many left disappointed after having their evenings out ruined.

Detective Superintendent Nev Nolan, who leads the National Mobile Phone Crime Unit, has warned fans to be on their guard, particularly over the festive period when new mobile phones are high on many people's Christmas lists. "We are concerned that organised thieves are targeting concerts to steal phones from genuine fans," he admitted.

"A lot of people like to use their mobile phones to film or take photographs of the concert, but will then return the phone to an insecure bag or pocket, where thieves are able to snatch it.

When they discover it is gone, many will simply assume it is lost and simply cancel the sim, without reporting it to the police."
