One in six road deaths due to drink

One in six deaths on Britain’s roads involve drivers over the legal alcohol limit, according to Government statistics.

The figures revealed that on average 3,000 people are killed or seriously injured each year in drink-drive collisions.

Currently in the UK, a driver is allowed 80mg of alcohol in their system per 100 millilitres of blood before they exceed the limit.

A recent poll by an online insurance broker revealed that many Britons think the legal alcohol limit for drivers should be lowered.

A total of 45% said to avoid confusion, it would be best if there was a total ban on drinking and driving.

But despite this, 31% of people said they felt the limit is fine as it is, and 6% thought it was too strict, saying they are generally “fine after a couple of drinks”.

Of those surveyed, 6% thought a person who kills someone while under the influence should be jailed for life.

A further 14% believed it was right that if you were caught driving with excess alcohol in your system you should have your license taken away.
