Mudslide in Isle of Man village

Back

Occupants of a village on the Isle of Man have been forced to leave their homes due to a mudslide, according to police.

A member of the public called emergency services after an embankment collapsed in Port St Mary, a village in the south of the island.

The residents of 12 houses were evacuated and took refuge in Port St Mary Town Hall. Police said that no one was injured in the mudslide.

It appears however that the main damage could be to home insurance providers who are facing a considerable pay-out.

An Isle of Man constabulary spokesman confirmed the main road into and out of the village was closed.

He said: "At this time, the efforts of all agencies are toward ensuring community safety and assisting persons evacuated. Those efforts will continue and be supported by a fuller evaluation of the extent of the land slippage in due course."
