Men losing DIY vehicle skills

Back

Men are ditching their DIY motor mechanic skills in favour of a DIFMs (Do It For Me) policy, according to a survey.  Only about 14% of male drivers attempt to take care of under-the-bonnet problems, the survey from Castrol found. While motorists are becoming ever more proactive in searching for the best car insurance deal they seem happy to take a step back from saving money elsewhere.

Rather than doing it themselves, three in four men are now relying on a professional for even the most basic care maintenance, the survey of 1,360 people showed.
With women, the number prepared to go down the DIY road is even smaller, with 87% of female motorists seeking professional help or asking their partners to do their car maintenance.

The survey also found that more than half of motorists are unsure if they are using the right oil for their car.  Rob Stroud of Castrol said: "While past generations took pride in their cars and spent hours keeping them in tip-top condition, men appear more inclined now to pop to the garage or visit a drive-through car wash."
