The latest supercar from McLaren will be named the MP4-12C when it is unveiled later this week.

The details of the hotly-anticipated vehicle - codenamed P11 throughout its design and production stages - were revealed by the head of McLaren Automotoive, Ron Dennis, in an interview over the weekend.

Mr Dennis said the car would have a v8 engine, a carbon-fibre chassis, and a seven-speed gearbox.

He told The Sunday Times: "It's an iconic design, like the E-Type Jaguar and, on all performance parameters and price, will be better than our competition.

"We're building more than a car, we're building a brand," said Dennis with McLaren Automotive planning a Porsche 911 and Audi R8-rivalling £70k supercar along with a top-end £300k-plus hypercar to rival the Porsche Carrera GT.

Mr Dennis, the former head of McLaren's F1 team, said the MP4-12C would be the first of three models planned by the supercar designer.
