A taxi driver who lied to avoid getting more penalty points on his licence has been banned from the road for six months.
Jasvinder Landa, 34, who was caught speeding in his private hire car, initially said his wife had been driving at the time.
He was given a 10-month prison sentence, suspended for 18 months, and ordered to do 180 hours' community service.
Both Landa and his wife Raji admitted two charges of trying to pervert the course of justice. His wife was given a four-month sentence, suspended for 18 months, and was ordered to do 60 hours of community service. On top of these penalties, the driver can also expect an increase in his car insurance premiums.
Photographs proved Landa had been driving the taxi when it was clocked speeding in Colwick on May 31 last year and in Basford on June 13.
Chief Inspector Andy Charlton, of Nottinghamshire Police, warned other motorists about lying to protect their licences.
"This case reflects the seriousness of trying to avoid paying a small fine by blatant dishonesty. If Mr Landa had admitted the original offence of speeding he would have received the fine and penalty points. However both he and his wife now have criminal records for perverting the course of justice.
"It shows the risk of being caught out is very high and the consequences are severe."
