Part of the outer wall of a block of four maisonettes has collapsed into the river in the flood-stricken Cumbrian town of Keswick.
The homes, on the bank of the River Greta at Low Mill, Greta Side, had already been evacuated. They are now being examined by structural engineers.
An unnamed householder told the Cumbria News and Star Newspaper: "The place looks like a bomb's hit it. The whole building was there one minute, the next it's all gone. It just dropped down. It's shocking."
Residents are in temporary accommodation, and the police have said the area will remain cordoned off until the engineers have completed their assessment.
