Fuel cost 'changing drivers' behaviour

Back

The soaring price of fuel is forcing drivers to slow down, stay at home or switch to bikes and buses, the RAC has reported.

As drivers look for ways to reduce the cost of motoring in the face of record-high costs of petrol and diesel they are sticking to speed limits, using park-and-rides and asking for fuel-economy tips.

Reports from patrol staff have revealed that traffic appears much lighter on some routes with people car-sharing, company drivers reducing their speeds at the request of their employers, a jump in the number of drivers using the inside lane behind lorries and caravan-users not travelling so far on holidays.

There has also been a rise in the number of people asking patrols to check their tyre pressure as they look to find ways to reduce their fuel consumption.

A spokesman said: "We have seen more call-outs for people running out of fuel because their £30 simply doesn't buy them as many miles as it did at the beginning of the year and considerably less than this time last year.

The cost of motoring has now taken over from the weather as the main topic of conversation during call-outs."
