Driving tips to help save on petrol

Drivers hunting cheap car insurance deals can also make significant cuts on the cost of motoring by saving petrol, experts say.

Warning of rising fuel prices, the Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM) advised sticking to 70mph instead of driving faster, as this can save around 4p a mile.

Ensuring tyres are the right pressure, removing empty roof boxes, switching off air conditioning and heated windows and clearing unnecessary loads from the car boot can also help.

An empty car roof box could increase fuel consumption by 20% on a motorway.

The IAM is also suggesting a smooth driving style, as opposed to an aggressive one, as this been estimated to reduce fuel consumption by around 15%.

Motorists should always plan their route in advance, the IAM added, as continuous, smooth driving on uncongested routes is always more economical, even if journeys are longer.

Commenting on the advice, IAM chief examiner Peter Rodger said: "A rise as little as 1p per litre will quickly add up.

Simple measures such as looking well ahead and slowing down earlier instead of always using the brakes to slow down can make a real difference.

A smoother driving style is the single best eco-driving tip. Good economical driving starts with safer driving and anticipation."
