Drivers warned to preserve petrol

Any shortage of supply of petrol is bound to push up pump prices which are already at record levels, motorists have been warned.

The AA also said road users should try to limit the number of journeys they make to help the preservation of supplies. "It's the economic rule that if there a shortage in the supply of something then the price goes up," said AA president Edmund King.

He went on: "If we do get petrol-supply difficulties in the next few days then prices at the pumps will rise. If motorists could just cut out one or two journeys a week then it would be a help. Drivers should consider leaving the car at home and walking if they can and should also think about working from home on one day a week."

Currently, average UK prices for petrol stand at 109.24p a litre, with diesel at 119.26p. The latest figures for Scotland are 109.00p for petrol and 119.53p for diesel. Between Sunday and Wednesday of this week, the UK average price of petrol rose 0.44p a litre while diesel went up 0.76p.
