Would you tell your insurer the truth if your car was stolen because you’d forgotten to lock it? If so, you’re not alone, according to a new survey.
When 1,400 drivers were asked if they’d confess to not locking their vehicle properly in the event of a theft, only a third (36%) said they’d own up.
Up to 33% of those surveyed said they’d deliberately cover up their mistake, and a further 31% said they didn’t know what they’d do.
Men proved to be the biggest frauds, with 39% saying they wouldn’t own up to their carelessness. Only 28% of women admitted the same.
Those north of the border were the most honest, with 42% coming clean when making a car insurance claim.
Just 33% of those from northern England said they would do the same.
The company which carried out the survey warned that if your claim is as a result of your own wrong-doing, then insurers are likely to see it as fraudulent.
This could ultimately mean that honest motorists lose out - and could even see future premiums increased.
