Drivers get bank holiday warning

Back

Drivers have been warned of the increased risk of bumps, shunts and scrapes over the bank holiday weekend as up to 15 million cars take to the roads.

Despite forecasts of cool and showery weather, millions of motorists are set to hit the road as the lure of a three-day weekend proves too much for those in search of a mini weekend break.

Car insurance companies are expecting a rise in the number of claims as clogged motorways trigger a surge in the number of shunts and scrapes.

The AA said that about a third of motorists are expected to be travelling this weekend, with Friday and Saturday earmarked as the busiest days.

The Highways Agency is due to complete 23 sets of roadworks before the weekend and is suspending 31 other sets from 6am on Friday until midnight on bank holiday Monday.

But 32 sets of roadworks will remain in place over the weekend, including those on a section of the M25 in Hertfordshire.

Paul Mott, a forecaster with MeteoGroup, the weather division of the Press Association, said the weather is going to be "nothing like last weekend" as a deep area of low pressure was expected to bring in cool, breezy and showery weather on Saturday, with highs of 16C, 61F in the south.
