Drink drivers face seizure of cars

Back

Scottish police have caught 17 repeat offenders and seized vehicles from five drivers in the first week of a festive campaign against drink-driving.

During the blitz, the police came across a 19-year-old, who had already been disqualified, had no car insurance and had taken the car without consent in Lochgelly.

The teenager, who was stopped over a faulty light, was also found to be over the legal alcohol limit, the police said.

In total, 124 drivers have been arrested for breaking the legal alcohol limit, down by 40 when compared to a year earlier.

Chief Constable Kevin Smith, of the Association of Chief Police Officers in Scotland, said that he was amazed to see that drivers were ready to take the "risk of not only killing or injuring themselves or others, but are now prepared to take the chance and risk being kept in a police cell, losing their licence and now their car", despite being aware of tougher police action.

He added: "A total of 124 drivers arrested is confirmation that we are out there 24/7 keeping our roads safe and I would urge every member of the community to consider it their responsibility to report drivers whom they suspect of drink-driving."
