Discounts on eco-friendly cars

Motorists in the Republic of Ireland could take advantage of a 5,000 euro (£4,416) discount if they choose an environmentally-friendly electric car.

As the Irish government continues to promote plug-in and battery powered machines, drivers switching to the eco-friendly models will avoid the costly vehicle registration tax.

The aim of the government is to have 2,000 electric car users by the end of 2011, minister Eamon Ryan, of the Green Party said.

There will be 30 fast charge points around the country and 3,500 charge points by the end of the year, thanks to the state's electricity company, ESB.

An extensive network of power sources will ease fears for drivers concerned over the distance the motors can travel, or top speeds.

The promotion, supported by the Renault-Nissan Alliance, will see the car-makers offer discounts on the Nissan Leaf hatchback - billed as the world's first affordable, zero-emission car, with a top speed of more than 140km/h (90mph) and a range of more than 160km - and also the Renault Kangoo ZE, with a top speed of 130km/h and range of about 100km.

Driving without insurance is illegal and can result in a fine or points on the motorist's licence.
