Diesel car uptake 'over fuel costs'

Back

Motorists are choosing to buy more diesel-engine cars, rather than the less economical petrol engine cars, due to the increase in fuel prices, a used car retailer has claimed.

Prospective switchers would be well advised to be wary as car insurance firms have shown they rarely pay out for instances where drivers have put the wrong type of fuel in their engines and damaged their cars.

Carcraft reported more diesel vehicle sales with fuel price rises and the VAT rate returning to 17.5 %. January fuel prices averaged 111.8p per litre for unleaded and 113.7p per litre for diesel, according to the AA.

"Fuel prices are definitely playing a part in people's choice of car" said Mike Walsh, Carcraft Sales Director.

"With diesel models offering a much more economical performance, we're finding more and more customers are making the switch from petrol," he added.
