Court hands footballer driving ban

Blackburn Rovers footballer Pascal Chimbonda has been banned from driving ban for six months after being found guilty of speeding.

The 30-year-old full-back exceeded the speed limit on the A1 near Newark, Nottinghamshire in October 2008 and was caught speeding again in January this year on the A19 near Thirsk, North Yorkshire.

Under the "totting up" rules, the player had more than 12 points on his licence and was over the threshold for a driving ban, Northallerton Magistrates’ Court heard.

Although he did not appear in court and was not legally represented, Chimbonda, of Loughton, Essex, was ordered to pay 2,185 pounds in fines and court costs for both offences.

On October 7 last year, the French international clocked 82mph in a 70mph zone while driving a black Cadillac saloon on the A1 near Newark.

He initially pleaded not guilty at Grantham Magistrates’ Court. But Northallerton Magistrates’ Court heard the offence and was told he had been speeding in January this year at 91mph in a 70mph zone on the A19 near Thirsk in his Porsche Cayenne.

The sentencing was due to take place earlier this month but the case was adjourned at his request.
