Clean-up starts after major floods

Torrential rain and flooding in Scotland led to a massive clean-up operation over the weekend after hundreds of homes were devastated by rising water.

Many residents in Moray were forced to spend the night in temporary accommodation or with friends and relatives after flooding near the rivers Lossie and Spey saw around 450 homes evacuated.

Distressed households are now checking their home insurance cover as the clean up begins and residents try to deal with the effects of a month's rain falling on the area in a single day.

However, the forecast for weather over the next few days in now "favourable", according to a statement released by the agencies involved in the operation.

"A multi-agency group comprising the local authority, Grampian Fire and Rescue Service and Grampian Police will continue to meet and we will collectively work to assess the impact of the floods and enable families to return to their homes where possible," it added.

Despite the main commuter routes now being clear, a spokesman for Grampian Police warned motorists to be wary of surface water on some minor roads and drive according to the conditions.

Environment agency Sepa currently has five flood watches in place for Scotland, covering Caithness and Sutherland, The Kyle of Sutherland, Lossie and Moray coastal rivers, the lower part of the River Spey and rivers in Orkney.
