Boy 5 takes 4x4 for morning spin

A 4x4 vehicle was taken from a family home, driven for four miles and ended up hitting a wall - then police found a five-year-old boy behind the wheel.

The child even avoided any injury, officers said, in a case which will need some explaining for any potential insurance claim.

Several calls were made to 999 when motorists saw a small boy slowly driving a Mitsubishi Shogun near Chichester, West Sussex, at around 7am. Police were also told by the boy's father at around the same time that his five-year-old son had just left the house driving the family car.

The boy's joyride ended when he drove into a wall in Pook Lane, Lavant - around four miles away. He was taken to hospital but no injuries were found and he was reunited with his family.

Three owners of vehicles, two of which were parked, reported damage, apparently caused by the boy in the Shogun.

PC Mark Ryan, of Sussex Police, said: "This was a remarkable incident and both the boy and other road users clearly had a lucky escape. A serious collision could have happened at any stage."
