A man in his 30s who stole a black BMW with a young child inside it is currently being hunted by police in Cardiff.

Family members were later reunited with the child and the car was discovered after about an hour.

Officers are searching for a white man wearing a waist-length blue coat, blue jeans and a light coloured scarf who stole the car from Park Grove at around 5.20pm.

He is thought to have driven down the road towards the New Theatre.

A full police response took place in the city centre and the car was found at 6.30pm.

South Wales Police said the child, whose age and sex have not been released, was found safe and well.

Chief Superintendent Josh Jones said: "This was a very serious incident which prompted a full South Wales Police response from officers within and outside the city, joined by our partner agencies including Cardiff Council. Everyone involved in the search was desperate to find the child and officers due to finish their shift remained on duty to ensure the child was found safe and well in just over an hour of us receiving the call.

"I would like to reassure the community that we are continuing to investigate the incident and are keen to trace the person who stole the vehicle. I would appeal to anyone with information to contact us."
