Air rules change to cut ash delays

Back

New measures allowing planes to travel at higher ash densities should subside the threat of flight restrictions and see fewer calls to travel insurance companies.

The new Time Limited Zone (TLZ) will enable airlines to operate a more regular schedule, but the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) said airlines need to present a safety case, including the agreement of aircraft and engine manufacturers, before they can use the zone. Flybe is set to be the first to do this, making use of the zone from midday on Tuesday.

Manufacturers have now established what levels of ash can be safely tolerated, CAA chief executive Andrew Haines said. Air traffic control company Nats said:"As a result of this change, there are no predicted restrictions on UK airspace in the immediate future."

Ed Anderson, chairman of the Airport Operators Association, said: "The moves by CAA and Flybe represent a step in the right direction, and will be welcomed by passengers and airport operators alike.

"We look forward to further positive announcements, each of which will go some way to building public confidence in this important industry."
