Driving abroad

Over two million UK motorists venture abroad every year, but sadly many forget some of the basics. What you do and don't need (aside from sun tan lotion and a decent magazine) is sometimes confusing. We hope the following will help:

  1. Cover Abroad: Your Sheilas' Wheels policy automatically provides MINIMUM cover (i.e. third party only) in EU countries and associated countries. To get the cover you enjoy in the UK you must call us on 0845 604 3550 and ask for foreign use extension.
  2. European Breakdown: It can cost as much as £2000 to recover a car from Southern Europe. Don't risk it. Although Sheilas' Wheels does not offer European Breakdown Cover we know it's important so shop around and make sure you're covered.
  3. Local laws and customs: Make sure you are aware of the laws in the country you are driving in. In Scandinavia - you must have your lights on all the time, day or night; In Finland there is a different speed limit depending whether it is raining or not; In France, you are required to give way to the right unless otherwise indicated.
  4. Driving on the other side: We know it's obvious, but most countries drive on the other side of the road. The most dangerous times - when you really need to think about this - is after a break or first thing in the morning, particularly if you are in a rural setting where there are no obvious road signs. Just make a point of reminding yourself BEFORE YOU TURN THE KEY every time - or get your partner or kids to say it out loud for fun. It could save your life. (One piece of advice is to put a small sticker with an arrow in the corner of your windscreen as a reminder.)
  5. Driving licence: The law in most countries require you to have it with you. You will need it if you are hiring a car.
  6. Accessories: GB Stickers are a legal requirement in Europe unless you have an EU number plate. Headlight deflectors that stop you dazzling other drivers are also required in some countries and are a good idea.
  7. Other tips: Make sure roof racks, roof boxes, bike racks etc. are properly secure before you set off.
