Requesting a Green Card

A Green Card is useful to have when you’re driving on the continent. It’s an internationally recognised document which proves you have the minimum insurance cover that’s legally required by the country you’re visiting.

But beware - a Green Card document itself does not provide you with insurance cover! It’s just proof of cover. You will still have to organise appropriate car insurance for your trip.  You can find out more about driving on the continent on the Sheilas’ Wheels motor insurance policy in the section Information for policy holders.

It’s not absolutely necessary to carry the Green Card document if you’re travelling to the EU and some European Countries but it can make your life easier. For example, even though a Green Card document is not a legal requirement in countries like  France and Italy - it is preferable to carry one. And in some Eastern European countries your car can be impounded if you cannot produce a Green Card in the event of an accident. For the latest information about the Green Card, take a look at the Direct Gov website.

When you’re planning a trip abroad, it’s a good idea to request your Green Card and arrange any additional insurance you need about a month in advance. Then you can  make sure your paperwork reaches you in good time.
