Reporting an accident

If you have an accident while driving abroad you should inform the local police and let your insurers know within 48 hours – even if you’re not sure it will lead to a claim. Most insurers will have a help line you that you can call from abroad in case of emergencies.

Don’t forget to carry your emergency contact numbers with you.

You should collect the same information as you would at home in the event of an accident:

Your insurer may issue a European Accident Statement for you to fill in straight away. This is designed to help you gather information about the accident as soon as it happens so you’re not struggling to remember the details later on. But remember, as with any insurance claim, you should not admit liability.
