Learn local road law
Remember, "when in Rome…do as the Romans do." Definitely don’t assume that all driving laws are the same in every country. Familiarise yourself with the driving laws in the country or countries you’re visiting.
The following are worth bearing in mind wherever you go:
- Seat belts are compulsory for front and rear passengers in most EU countries
- Speeding and other traffic offences are often subject to on-the-spot fines and in some EU countries your licence can be confiscated immediately
- Don’t forget speed limits are usually shown in kilometres and not miles on the continent. 50kmh is equivalent to 30mph. So if you mistake your kilometres for miles you could be breaking the speed limit!
- Speed-trap detection devices are illegal in most European countries
- Many EU states have stricter drink driving laws and only accept blood alcohol levels of 0.5mg/ml rather than the 0.8mg/ml accepted in the UK. The safest policy is simply not to drink and drive
